Pantothenic acid is needed for the synthesis of coenzyme A (CoA), which plays a role in the citric acid cycle (a series of biochemical reactions that provide energy management at a cellular level by burning nutrients, which produces ATP, among other things). In this way, it helps release energy from fat, carbohydrates and proteins and can help reduce fatigue.

In the form of CoA it is also needed for the synthesis of cholesterol, from which steroid hormones and vitamin D can be produced, and as acetyl-CoA it provides the acetyl group needed for the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
