Vitamin B12 works closely with folate in the body. Therefore, in most cases it is important to take these nutrients in combination. This product consists of 1000 µg vitamin B12 in the biologically active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin (also called dibencozide) and 500 µg 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). These are the forms in which vitamin B12 and folate are used by the body. In other products, vitamin B12 often occurs as cyanocobalamin and folate as folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid). These are synthetic forms that do not occur in nature and must be converted by the body into the biologically active forms. A problem with pteroylmonoglutamic acid is that in a relatively large group of people the conversion into 5-MTHF is difficult. That is why Vitals uses Quatrefolic®, which consists of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate bound to glucosamine salt for its stability and superior bioavailability.

Functions of Vitamin B12 and Folate
Vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin is needed together with 5-MTHF to convert homocysteine ​​into methionine (vitamin B6 is also involved in this). Too high a homocysteine ​​level is undesirable. Methionine in turn is mainly used for the production of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), which is involved as a methyl donor in the production of DNA, RNA, phospholipids, proteins and neurotransmitters. Thus, vitamin B12 and folate are involved in the cell division process and are needed for the production of red blood cells.

Through the joint involvement of vitamin B12 and folate (and vitamin B6) in DNA synthesis and protein synthesis, these nutrients influence the activation of certain immune cells and thus the normal functioning of the immune system.

In the form of adenosylcobalamin (in the mitochondria), vitamin B12 is involved in the conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, which plays a role in the citric acid cycle (a series of biochemical reactions that provide energy metabolism at the cellular level). Vitamin B12 and folate are also needed for normal brain and nerve functions, and are therefore good for concentration, memory and mood. Vitamin B12 and folate can also help to reduce fatigue.

Sometimes vitamin B12 is not absorbed well in certain people. In such situations, supplementing the diet with a high-dose B12 supplement can provide a solution. Due to the close collaboration with folate, it is advisable to combine these two vitamins. For optimal effectiveness, this product is also combined with a multivitamin, whereby it is important that the total daily intake of folate does not exceed 1000 µg in the case of long-term use (> 3 months).
