Vitamin A 4000 ie from Vitals consists of vegan softgels with a high dosage of vitamin A in the stable and pure form retinyl palmitate, in a base of MCT oil. Softgels are popular and extremely pleasant to use because they are easy to swallow. Fortunately, softgels are no longer exclusively made from animal gelatine. These are now also available from vegetable sources (such as tapioca starch from cassava). Vitamin A 4000 ie from Vitals is therefore also very suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Vitamin A: the versatile vitamin for eyes, skin and immune system
Vitamin A is important for many functions in your body. It helps with the development of cells, so that they can perform their specific task well, such as in the skin and the mucous membranes in the intestines and lungs. Vitamin A is also essential for the eyes. It helps, among other things, to keep seeing sharply, even in the dark. In addition, vitamin A supports the maintenance of a normal moisture balance of the eyes and contributes to a healthy function of the cornea. Vitamin A also plays a role in a good and balanced function of the immune system. It also helps your body to make iron more available from body stores, which is important for maintaining a good iron level in your blood.
Difference between vitamin A (retinol) and provitamin A (beta-carotene)
In nutritional supplements, you can find two forms of vitamin A: beta-carotene and retinol. Beta-carotene is also called provitamin A, because your body must first convert it into vitamin A. The advantage of beta-carotene is that its conversion is regulated in the body in such a way that too much vitamin A is never formed.
But there is also a disadvantage: the conversion of beta-carotene to vitamin A is not always efficient. This means that you are not sure how much vitamin A you will ultimately get from beta-carotene. In situations where you need extra vitamin A, it may therefore be wise to opt for a supplement with immediately available vitamin A, in the form of retinol. Sometimes a combination of retinol and beta-carotene is also used, for example in pregnancy vitamins.
Important to know: in the Netherlands and Belgium, the amount of vitamin A (retinol) in supplements is legally limited to 1200 mcg per day, an amount that is safe, even for pregnant women. Vitamin A 4000 ie from Vitals contains exactly that safe dosage of 1200 mcg per vegan softgel, in the form of retinyl palmitate. This is a stable compound of retinol with a fatty acid, which ensures that the vitamin A is better preserved and optimally effective.
