Psyllium is a natural source of soluble and fermentable fibres. It is extracted from the seed husk of the seeds of the plant Plantago ovata, which is mainly grown in India. Psyllium fibres can absorb up to ten times their own weight in water. They cannot be broken down by the digestive enzymes in the small intestine and therefore arrive intact in the large intestine. And thanks to their good solubility in water, they can be broken down (fermented) by the intestinal flora in the large intestine, whereby, among other things, short-chain fatty acids (such as butyrate) are formed. Other soluble fibres are mainly found in vegetables, fruit, legumes and grains such as oats. An advantage of psyllium fibres compared to other soluble fibres is that the fermentation in the large intestine is relatively slow, which means that consuming psyllium gives less cause for side effects that can occur when consuming other (soluble) dietary fibres, such as a bloated feeling. The recommended total daily intake of dietary fibre is 30-40 grams for adults. People with too low a fiber intake can use psyllium fibers as a dietary supplement. Psyllium can be taken with (plenty of) water, but it can also be processed through food. Psyllium is also a good gluten substitute in recipes and can be used as a binding agent in bread (approximately 4 grams per 500 grams of flour), healthy snacks, sauces and soups. Psyllium can also be added to, for example, a smoothie or breakfast cereals.
Organic
The active ingredients of organic food supplements are guaranteed to be of natural origin and not synthetically manufactured. In addition, the environment, animals and people are taken into account as much as possible during production. Various regulations specify what is meant by this. For example, no chemical pesticides, artificial fertilisers or genetically modified organisms are used. The Skal Biocontrole institute checks whether the regulations are complied with and whether a product may be called organic. Organic products can be recognised by the code NL-BIO-01 and the European organic quality mark.
