Approximately five hundred amino acids occur in nature. Twenty of these are amino acids that serve as building blocks for proteins in the human body, these are referred to as 'fundamental amino acids'. These fundamental amino acids can be further subdivided into the categories 'essential', 'semi-essential' and 'non-essential'. L-arginine belongs to the so-called semi-essential amino acids, which means that the body can partly produce them itself and is partly dependent on food to be able to meet the daily requirement. Adults can produce arginine themselves from the amino acids ornithine, glutamine, glutamate and proline; nevertheless, the amount of arginine in food contributes significantly to the total arginine supply. For children and young people, arginine is an essential amino acid because the biosynthesis is still too low.

L-arginine is incorporated into proteins and can be converted into other amino acids (such as ornithine and proline). In addition, arginine is the only precursor of nitric oxide (NO), a biochemical signaling substance. Arginine is also a precursor of creatine and polyamines.
