The Every Day multis from Vitals are led by Every Day Platinum. We use the addition 'Platinum' for the highest dosed, most complete variant in a series. And that certainly applies to this multi, where the most optimal dosages are achieved with two tablets per day. It is the first choice for anyone who wants the best of the best.
A major problem when formulating a multivitamin and mineral supplement is the limited space in a tablet. In particular, certain important macrominerals often suffer, such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. Of course, price also plays an important role. This is often at the expense of important, but expensive nutrients such as vitamin K2 and Q10. When developing Elke Dag Platinum, more space was created by assuming two tablets per day. This means that it is not necessary to take various other basic supplements in addition to arrive at the most desirable daily dosages. The result is a multi with generous dosages of, among other things, magnesium (100 mg), calcium (200 mg), potassium (300 mg) and vitamin C (400 mg), but also high dosages of vitamin K2 (180 μg) and vitamin D3 (50 μg). And the addition of special nutrients such as lutein, zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin, taurine, acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid, Q10 and PQQ.
For whom
Elke Dag Platinum is for adults and seniors who benefit from the higher dosages and who do not want to have to take a separate calcium, magnesium, potassium and/or vitamin C, D or K supplement in addition to their multi. Ideal to support an active lifestyle (busy life, demanding job, physical work, sports) or to do everything possible to grow old as healthily as possible.
Based on recent data and insights
Elke Dag Platinum is a carefully designed multi with essential nutrients and special supplements. In its composition, it was decided to use easily absorbable substances and compounds, in the right proportions and in dosages that matter. Per nutrient, taking into account the average intake of adults and the elderly in the Netherlands. And taking into account the estimated daily requirement to support or promote optimal health. The substantiation for the recommended daily amounts (RDAs 1 ) was examined, but where necessary, deviations were made based on the progressive (orthomolecular) insights obtained from (recent) scientific research. Of course, choices have to be made here, because only a limited amount fits in a tablet and the price cannot be too high. Elke Dag Platinum is very well substantiated, excels in many respects and will stand comparison with other multis with flying colours.
1 The term RDA is used here because it is still the best-known term, but has now been replaced by the term RI (reference intake). These are legal guideline values established by the European Commission. These guideline values give an indication of the amount of vitamins and minerals that an adult needs on average. No distinction is made on the basis of age, gender and specific circumstances. The amount of vitamins and minerals in a food supplement is stated on the label as a percentage (%) of the RI. However, the RIs may deviate from the recommended amounts as established by the Health Council.
B vitamins in optimal forms and dosages
Elke Dag Platinum contains ample but responsible amounts of B vitamins. The daily requirement and the average intake and distribution thereof have been carefully considered. The extent to which the body is able to convert the various B vitamins, the latest scientific insights and safe upper limits have also been taken into account.
Every Day Platinum contains the biologically active (co-enzymatic) forms of vitamin B2 (riboflavin-5'-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin) and folic acid (5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt). These are the forms as they are used by the body and research shows that they have a higher bioavailability in the body.
Folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid), which is often used in food supplements for stability, is a synthetic form that does not occur naturally. In food, it occurs as folate. Folic acid must be converted by the body into tetrahydrofolate and then into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Research shows that this complex conversion process is far from optimal in a significant group of people. Supplementation with 5-MTHF circumvents this problem.
Elke Dag Platinum uses the superior form 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, bound to glucosamine salt (branded Quatrefolic®). This bond with glucosamine salt (from a plant source) makes it possible to keep the biologically active form stable and ensures optimal absorption. Studies show that Quatrefolic® has a higher water solubility, stability and bioavailability. In addition, 5-MTHF is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike the 'normal' (synthetic) form of folic acid.
Vitamin B12 as methyl- and adenosylcobalamin
The absorption of vitamin B12 from food is a complex process. In addition, there are indications that the RDA (or RI) of 2.5 μg per day has been underestimated and the requirement of healthy adults and the elderly can vary and amount to more than 20 μg per day. Due to the safety of vitamin B12 supplementation and the sometimes difficult absorption of B12 from food and supplements, Elke Dag Platinum contains no less than 40 μg of vitamin B12 in the biologically active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
Many B12 products and multis contain cyanocobalamin, which is a cheaper, synthetic form of vitamin B12 that does not occur naturally and must be converted by the body into the active forms. In this process, the cyanide part is detached from the cobalamin and must then be cleared by the body. Studies also show that vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin has a higher biological availability than cyanocobalamin.
Vitamin D
In recent years, European government agencies have determined that the level for adequate dietary intake of vitamin D should be higher (15 μg) and that the maximum permitted dosage could be increased (100 μg). In the Netherlands, they are still cautious and indicate that 10 μg is sufficient and that the maximum amount is 75 μg. The RDA/RI has strangely enough remained at 5 μg. However, in the orthomolecular world, the importance of higher dosages has been known for some time. Leading vitamin D experts advise that the vitamin D level (calcidiol level) should be at least 75 nmol/l. To maintain such a vitamin D level, an oral dose of vitamin D3 is required of an estimated 25-75 μg per day. Elke Dag Platinum therefore contains a generous dosage of 50 μg per two tablets.
Vitamin K
Every Day Platinum contains 45 μg of vitamin K1 and 180 μg of vitamin K2. Vitamin K1 is mainly absorbed by the liver and ensures activation of clotting factors, while vitamin K2 is distributed much more over the body tissues. The regularly established RDA for vitamin K is based on the amount required for normal blood clotting. This does not take into account the optimal dosage for the other, very important functions of vitamin K. Such as ensuring that calcium is properly absorbed and ends up in the right place, namely in the bones. And in the regular advice, no distinction is made between vitamin K1 and K2. Vitamin K2 is absorbed no less than 10x better and has a much greater biological availability than vitamin K1. That is why vitamin K2 is much more effective in achieving an optimal vitamin K status and superior to vitamin K1. Vitamin K2 is also much more effective than vitamin K1 in activating specific vitamin K-dependent enzymes. It is these activated enzymes that ensure that calcium finds its way to the bones. Research has shown that 180 μg of vitamin K2 is the optimal daily dosage.
Stability of vitamin K2
Vitamin K2 appears to be a very sensitive substance. Particularly in combination with calcium and/or magnesium, the content of this vitamin in a tablet or capsule decreases rapidly. Using vitamin K2 in a product with high doses of calcium and/or magnesium is technically a real challenge. Vitals therefore uses a high-quality K2 ingredient with the brand name K2Vital Delta, which is even stable in a formula with many of these minerals. A patented micro-encapsulation process is used, in which the fat-soluble K2 particles are protected with two layers (including gum arabic and starch) against interaction with other ingredients. Vitals has had research done in an independent laboratory into the stability of this K2Vital Delta, as well as other brands of vitamin K2, specifically in combination with the ingredients used in Vitals products. The conclusions were that protecting the K2 is absolutely necessary, that the K2 content remained stable with K2Vital Delta, and that it was superior to the other K2 ingredients.
High doses of natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
A special feature of this multi is that it contains high doses of calcium and magnesium, so that these do not have to be taken as a separate product. Very convenient. And the source of these minerals is also special: they are from the Aquamin® brand and come from the sea. The magnesium (Aquamin Magnesium) is obtained from the seawater of the Irish Sea, and studies show that it is absorbed particularly well in the body. In addition to approximately 35% elemental magnesium, the raw material also contains small amounts of more than 70 trace elements. The calcium (Aquamin Calcium) comes from a red algae called Lithothamnium calcareum. This type of algae absorbs minerals and trace elements from the sea and stores them. When alive, it has a beautiful red/pink color, but when it dies, it calcifies and turns white or light gray. Only calcified red algae is harvested, from the waters along the coast of Iceland. In addition to 32% calcium, the raw material also contains 3% magnesium and small amounts of more than 70 trace elements. The synergistic effect of the natural trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium may partly explain the improved absorption and the impressive studies that have been conducted with it.
Potassium is also well represented
Potassium is often one of the first minerals to be neglected when a multivitamin and mineral supplement is formulated. This is because the daily requirement for potassium is high (around 3500 mg per day for adults) and not much fits in a tablet. Often you will not see potassium or very low doses in multis. But in Elke Dag Platinum there is also room for no less than 300 mg of potassium! This is quite unique and yet very important. Because in addition to the many regular recommendations to pay attention to salt intake (sodium), you will also read in studies and articles from the orthomolecular corner the advice to think about increasing potassium intake. In addition, the recent food consumption survey shows that the daily intake in the Netherlands for adults is on average around 3200 mg, while the recommended amount is 3500 mg. So it is not an unnecessary luxury to get an extra 300 mg of potassium daily via a multi. Potassium has a beneficial effect on maintaining normal blood pressure, and this effect is greater in people with a high sodium intake. In addition, it plays an important role in muscle contraction and nerve impulse conduction, and is therefore important for good muscle function and the nervous system.
Iron, zinc, copper and manganese as amino acid chelate (bisglycinate)
Amino acid chelates (bisglycinates) were chosen for the minerals iron, zinc, copper and manganese. In these, each mineral particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this form of bond reach the small intestine well and are very well absorbed. They are also mild for the stomach, which can be a great advantage, especially in the case of iron (Ferrochel®). In addition, Vitals specifically chooses the amino acid chelates of Albion Minerals, recognizable by the trademark TRAACS®, which stands for The Real Amino Acid Chelate System. This brand was created to be able to make a good distinction from other, possibly inferior, unstable amino acid chelates. Albion has registered more than 100 patents worldwide that guarantee the process, science and structure of their amino acid chelated minerals.
A generous amount of choline
Choline has been a standard ingredient in multis for a long time. But almost always in low doses (between 10-30 mg). Because not much was known about it. But more and more is known about it now! In 2012, the European Commission approved three health claims for choline, which apply to a dosage of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal lipid and homocysteine metabolism and important for normal liver function. In 2016, the RDA was set in America at 550 mg/day, based on clinical research specifically intended to determine the daily requirement. In 2016, the EFSA also judged that choline is an essential nutrient, but has not yet set an RDA. The adequate intake was set at 400 mg/day, based on the average intake in European countries, not based on the American study. The average intake of adults in Europe varies between 291 and 468 mg/day. Reason enough to process a large amount of choline in a daily multi. Elke Dag Platinum contains no less than 170 mg of choline from the brand VitaCholine®. This brand stands for superior quality and has been extensively researched.
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin
In addition to 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin, Elke Dag Platinum also contains 10 mg meso-zeaxanthin, which is quite special and is based on recent research. These are natural carotenoids that are found in high concentrations in the retina and macula lutea. The body cannot produce lutein and zeaxanthin itself, but must obtain them from food. These are found in green leafy vegetables, and red, yellow and orange vegetables and fruits. Meso-zeaxanthin is only found in food to a very limited extent (shrimp, salmon skin, trout skin and meat). It is mainly produced in the retina by converting lutein through an enzymatic reaction. It can be supplemented well.
Coenzyme Q10
Co-enzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a substance naturally occurring in the body and is found in the mitochondria (the so-called 'energy factories') of every cell in our body. Loosely translated, 'ubiquinone' means approximately 'present everywhere'. As we age, the body's own production of co-enzyme Q10 gradually decreases. That is why Elke Dag Platinum contains a nice dosage of 50 mg.
Taurine
Taurine is a semi-essential nutrient for adults and is mainly synthesized in the liver and brain from the sulfur-containing amino acids cysteine and methionine; vitamin B6 is involved in this conversion. Endogenous synthesis is limited and dietary intake is important for a good taurine status, especially if the taurine requirement is increased. Since taurine is mainly found in meat, fish and poultry, vegetarians and vegans are more likely to have too low a dietary intake.
Acetyl-L-carnitine
In food, carnitine is mainly found in (red) meat and to a much lesser extent in plant foods. Carnitine can be converted into acetyl-L-carnitine and vice versa as needed. In the liver, kidneys and brain, carnitine can be synthesized from the amino acids lysine and methionine, with vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6 and niacin as co-factors. Supplementation with acetyl-L-carnitine has the advantage over L-carnitine that it crosses the blood-brain barrier more easily.
Alpha-lipoic acid
Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid found in the mitochondria of every cell. It is soluble in both fat and water, which is an important property. Small amounts of alpha-lipoic acid are produced in the body. It is also found in small amounts in food, for example in liver, spinach and broccoli.
PQQ
pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt (PQQ) is a substance discovered in 1964 and found in small quantities in fermented products such as natto and tofu, eggs, breast milk, but also in certain herbs, vegetables and fruits. The body also produces very small quantities itself. Elke Dag Platinum uses the patented MGCPQQ® (previously known as BioPQQ®), based on natural fermentation. This product has been extensively researched and was approved as a food supplement in Europe in 2018.
