Choline has long been an undervalued (vitamin B-like) nutrient. But more and more is known about it. In 2012, the European Commission determined that three health claims for choline may be considered scientifically proven. It was determined that it is important for normal lipid metabolism, normal homocysteine ​​metabolism and a well-functioning liver. And in 2016, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) ruled that choline is an essential nutrient, which the body does not produce sufficiently and must be obtained largely from food. The adequate intake was set in Europe at 400 mg/day for adults, based on the average intake in European countries. For women who are pregnant, 480 mg/day is recommended and for women who are breastfeeding even 520 mg per day. In 2016, an adequate intake was also established for the first time in America. However, this is based on clinical research specifically designed to establish daily requirements (sufficient for a healthy liver), and came out at 550 mg/day. The average intake of adults in Europe varies between 291 and 468 mg/day.

Choline is a component of phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin) and an important component of cell membranes. It also plays a role in lipid metabolism: the choline derivative phosphatidylcholine is a component of VLDL cholesterol and is involved in the conversion and removal of fats from the liver. Choline is therefore important for a well-functioning and healthy liver. It is also necessary for the formation of betaine, which in turn is involved as a methyl donor in the remethylation of homocysteine ​​in the liver. Normal homocysteine ​​metabolism contributes to the maintenance of normal homocysteine ​​blood levels.

Synergy
Choline has important interactions with vitamin B6, B12, folate and SAMe. Furthermore, phosphatidylcholine produced via the SAMe-dependent metabolic pathway is enriched with DHA, forming phosphatidylcholine-DHA. Choline and DHA interact synergistically with each other.
